Press Statement
Kyoto, Japan, March 4, 2025 – OMRON Healthcare, Co., Ltd., a global leader in healthcare technology, today addresses recent concerns raised in media regarding the collection and use of location data through its OMRON connect mobile application. We want to assure our valued customers and stakeholders that OMRON is fully committed to protecting user privacy and complying with all relevant data privacy regulations, maintaining the highest standards of data protection.
Clarification on Data Privacy Practices
An article published in Dutch media on March 3rd suggests that OMRON has been sharing location data of OMRON connect app users with a third party without their knowledge or consent. We take these allegations very seriously and wish to clarify the following points:
No Storage or Use of Personal Location Data: OMRON does not store or use personal location data in any form and for any purpose. Location data is needed only for the functions stated in our privacy statement. The location data request within the OMRON connect app is solely for wireless connection stability between the user's phone and the device, an industry standard practice.
No Personal Data Used Outside of Agreed Privacy Statement: OMRON strictly adheres to the privacy statement agreed upon by our users. At no point has personal data been used outside of these agreed terms.
Disabling Data Sharing with OneSignal: In response to the concerns raised, OMRON has disabled the unintentional sharing of anonymous location data with OneSignal, the third-party service provider used for push notifications. For additional clarification and transparency, we want to confirm that no personal data of any kind (including health data) has ever been shared with OneSignal.
Anonymous information: Anonymous information is not considered personal data as such, and therefore, any concerns about personal data protection in the OMRON connect app appear to be unrelated.
"We recognize the importance of user privacy, especially in the healthcare domain and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of data protection," said Minoru Yoshimura, Senior General Manager Digital Health at OMRON Healthcare. "The location data request in the OMRON connect app is intended to enhance the user experience by providing a stable connection between the phone and the device. The data provided to OneSignal is anonymous, ensuring that individuals cannot be identified from it. However, to avoid any future concerns, we have disabled the sharing of this data with OneSignal."
Commitment to Transparency and User Trust
OMRON upholds the highest standards in terms of transparency in personal data and privacy. This commitment is reflected in our OMRON connect Privacy Statement (Version 2.16 – October 2024), which outlines our data collection, usage, and protection practices. The Privacy Statement is applicable in the European Economic Area (EEA) and ensures that all personal data collected through the OMRON connect app is processed in compliance with European data protection legislation.
